Be mindful of political bubbles

It's election week in New Zealand. Election ads are everywhere, pundits are frothing at the chops, and every Tom, Dick, and Harriet has a hot take to spray on the socials.

Some of this conversation is about good ideas, preferred candidates, or policy promises but more of it is about how stupid, evil, and ignorant the other guy is. It's a prevalent tactic in today's doomscape: "the other side are ruining everything / have ruined everything / would ruin everything, so... vote for me!" Inspiring stuff.

Your chicken, your choice.

It reminds me of the weirdly defensive tagline for this chicken place that's popping up everywhere. The kids and I always cackle when we see it. "What? It's my choice! You can't stop me! I'm sure it's fine. Leave me alone! I'll have it if I want..." There are 22 of these shops now, so clearly the tagline isn't putting people off.

Anyway, this is your friendly reminder that we're all in a bubble. If the other side seems stupid or evil, it's worth a pause. No matter how confident you are about the superiority of your cosy wee bubble, it's worth remaining open and compassionate. Just in case.

Til next week,
